THE TURBYNES HOUR (ongoing) is our semi-regular radio show which is broadcast on Bradford Community Broadcasting - that’s BCB on 106.6 FM and online, baby! We use these shows to explore different topics and themes - it’s kinda like band practice for us. Think foraged sounds, bad physics and musical side quests. Witchy witterings with a seasonal flex. DIAL-AN-ARCHIVE (2025) is an interactive sound installation we made using a rotary telephone, installed at Bradford District Arts Centre (BDAC) in West Yorkshire. The phone allows listeners to access archival audio and explore the layered histories of the Grade II listed building where it is installed. Dial-An-Archive is free to visit and can be found in the entrance hall of the Arts Centre. The piece was commissioned by BDAC and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

CHANNELS (2025) was part of the Bradford 2025 artistic programme. It's a series of site-specific audio artworks inspired by three man-made bodies of water in Bradford District: Bingley Five Rise Locks, Chellow Dean Reservoirs, and the Mirror Pool in City Park. The pieces weave together community voices, field recordings and reflective writing, and are accessed via QR codes at purpose-built listening benches installed at each site. During the making process, we thought of water as both a boundary and a connector. We were thinking about where the natural world begins and ends. How do we shape these waters, and how do they shape us? Due to popular demand, the listening benches have been formally adopted by landowners and remain in-situ. Co-produced by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.

WORKING TITLE (2024) is a creative audio documentary which we made from conversations with people from Sowerby Bridge about work. We asked folk about their dream jobs, worst ever jobs, and what they wanted to be when they grew up. Using found, original and archival material, this dreamy piece reflects on the hopes, memories and working cultures of the town. The work was shared as a looping sound installation at GLOW Festival in February 2024. Commissioned by Sowerby Bridge Fire and Water as part of the Heritage High Street Action Zone Cultural Programme funded by Historic England and Arts Council England.

EDGELANDS (2023) is a flavour of an idea, part of the research and development process for what became CHANNELS. It's a mash-up of sounds and footage to convey a sense of seasonal living in 21st Century urban environments. The work was shared with an invited audience at the Shipley Beehive in October 2023. Funded by Bradford 2025 UK City of Culture.

 

HEARTH (2023) was how we started working together as Turbynes, though we didn't know it at the time. Rosie was artist-in-residence at Bradford City Hall in spring/summer 2022 and worked with MARF to create a sound installation for the entrance hall. HEARTH draws on City Hall's environmental legacy, its civic purpose, its democratic ideals, and its place in the public imagination. It was first shared in 2022 and was recommissioned in 2023. Commissioned by Bradford Council and funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
